While recording The Second Echo‘s first album, I had the gorgeous Cannon 5D MkII that once again I had the pleasure to borrow from a dear friend, and this time I had the opportunity to turn the attention to the sublime equipment that the studio is a home to. The fantastic collection of vintage audio gear at Snap! Studios is a mouthwatering audio orgasm – real tools of the trade, some of which have been in use for decades, that bring music to life via a recorded medium, shaping texture, dynamics, tone, colour, groove and feel to create the finished product that is the mix.
There is something utterly irresistible about the vintage design of audio equipment. From a time when engineers and designers could not order a set of knobs online, everything had to be conceived and manufactured to order and spec. Every piece of kit had its own unique character and individuality. Metal chassis were big and heavy, meters were large and clear, knobs were tactile and sturdy, text was carved or milled carefully, colours faded slightly, and its sense of self preserved. This album is a homage to the eye candy collection that is kept at its highest working form at Snap! Studios.
